Attorney and Trial Lawyer
Kent Strunk is an attorney and a committed trial lawyer whose criminal defense practice spans more than 25 years. Over the course of his career, he has represented clients facing serious charges and has developed a reputation for careful preparation, thoughtful strategy, and steady courtroom involvement. His long tenure in the legal profession reflects a continued dedication to responsible advocacy and a grounded approach to the practice of law.
Legal Career and Professional Achievements
He graduated from the Northern Illinois College of Law in 1998 and immediately entered the field, focusing on criminal defense. Early in his career, he took on trial work and quickly gained experience handling challenging cases. His interest in courtroom practice shaped his professional path and enabled him to build a solid foundation through hands-on involvement.
Across his career, Kent has tried more than 100 felony jury trials, including two high-profile murder cases that required extensive preparation and sustained attention to detail. His commitment to trial work earned him recognition from the Minnesota Public Defenders Office, which named him the 9th Judicial District's top jury trial attorney for three years in a row. This recognition reflects the significant level of his courtroom activity and the steady work he has committed to over the years.
Despite these accomplishments, he approaches his profession with humility and a consistent focus on preparation rather than public recognition. He relies on careful analysis, clear communication, and strategic planning to guide his work. His goal in each case is to thoroughly understand the details and provide representation grounded in fairness and responsibility. These qualities have shaped his reputation in Minnesota’s legal community, where he is known as a dependable and thoughtful practitioner.
Over more than two decades of work, Strunk has continued to refine his skills and adapt to evolving legal challenges. His career has required him to review complex legal issues, anticipate unexpected developments, and maintain a balanced perspective while representing clients facing serious charges. Through these experiences, he has strengthened his ability to navigate the demands of criminal defense with consistency and professionalism.
Research and Volunteer Engagement
In addition to his legal practice, he has expanded his professional experience through research work and community involvement. These roles highlight his interest in contributing to efforts that extend beyond the courtroom and support broader public needs.
From March 2022 to July 2024, he worked with the National Opinion Research Center in Chicago, Illinois. During this period, he contributed to national studies, including the Consumer Finance Survey and the Early Childcare and Education Survey. His responsibilities included conducting field interviews with individuals from diverse communities, gathering accurate data, and supporting research that required objective and nonpartisan results.
This work demanded strong communication skills, careful organization, and the ability to collect information with precision. He values this part of his career because it has allowed him to contribute to national research efforts that inform public programs and policy discussions. The role allowed him to apply his strengths in structured interviewing, documentation, and respectful interaction with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Kent Strunk's commitment to service is also demonstrated through his volunteer work. He has participated in United Way efforts for several years, including serving as a disbursement judge. He has also supported the Boys and Girls Club as a donor. These roles reflect his interest in contributing to organizations that provide guidance and support for young people and families within the community.
He has also been involved in mentoring and community events, offering his time during busy periods or when programs require additional support. These contributions reflect his belief in supporting efforts that strengthen community resources and assist those who need it most. His participation has been steady and aligns closely with the values he applies in his professional work.
Family Life
Family is at the center of his life, and he has balanced his professional responsibilities with a strong commitment to his household. He married on September 15, 2000, and he and his spouse have four children. Their first child was born in 2001, their second in 2003, and twins arrived in 2006.
Their first child was featured in the Minnesota book Faces of Hope, which highlighted newborns born on that day. This child later graduated from the University of Minnesota and is currently pursuing graduate studies. Their second child earned a degree in Archaeology from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse and plans to pursue graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. The twins also attend the University of Minnesota. One is studying management, while the other has been active in theater and recently played a lead role in a school production.
As the primary caregiver, Kent has remained closely involved in his children’s education, routines, and interests. He values spending time with them and supporting their activities. One family tradition he has maintained since their births is attending at least one Minnesota Twins game each year with each child. This tradition has become an essential part of their shared experiences, reflecting their appreciation for Minnesota athletics and their commitment to spending meaningful time together.
Personal Interests and Traditions
His personal interests reflect a grounded lifestyle centered on family, community involvement, and long-standing traditions. Over more than 25 years as an attorney, he has balanced his professional responsibilities with active participation in research, volunteer work, and family life. His ability to take on different roles demonstrates adaptability and a strong commitment to meaningful work.
